IN a bid
to halt the decline of tuart trees in WA landholders from Yanchep
through to Busselton are participating in a trial to test a
newly identified treatment that will help boost the health of
the sick trees.
For the
past six years Alcoa has been working with Murdoch University’s
Tuart Health Research Group to study possible tree declines
and identify management options.
Alcoa mining
environmental research manager Dr Ian Colquhoun said the research
identified a treatment to improve the tree health.
“It
involves injecting the tree with the fungicide phosphite and
inserting nutrient plugs into the tuart’s trunk.
“This
treatment has the potential to make a big difference to the
tuart trees that are so highly valued by the local community,”
Dr Colquhoun said.
Tests at
various sites over the last four years have been positive.
To assist
in the next phase of the trial, 20 local landowners are road
testing the treatment with the tuart trees on their properties.
To launch
the road test, a workshop was held last Sunday at the Lake Clifton-Herron
Community Centre.
Organised
by Alcoa, Murdoch University, City of Mandurah and Green Skills
the session gave landowners the latest research information
and meet test pioneer Peter Scott.
“This
road test will enable us to test the tuart’s response
to the treatment under a range of different environmental conditions,”
Mr Scott said.
